Line Up for March 23rd, 2013Is this really the last line up post for the Winter Farmers Market's inaugural year?! We've had so much fun (and so little sleep!) seeing everyone each Saturday morning at Thomas School! But don't let me get too gushy, there's still one market left! And what a great one!

Even though the weather forgot that Spring is here your Growers at the Winter Farmers Market have not! Tim Francis of Union Springs Farm and Crystal and Brice Cooley of Cooley's Farm will have heirloom starts and bedding plants! You'll find many varieties of tomatoes, kales, cabbages, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and more! These folks have been at it for years and the quality of their plants is clear! (I grew two varieties of Tim's heirloom tomatoes last year, so feel free to ask me how much tomato sauce I STILL have made from the bounty! ha!)

Bring the kids along for fun activities from Dayemi Parent & Child Collective! Our Market music makers will be in Chicago this weekend, and though we will miss them we are excited to welcome members of the Tomcat Hill Social Club! Their tunes are quite similar (if you're not already familiar) and they're sure to make you tap a toe or two around the market!

Finally, If you have any stray Market Bucks that you've missed the date on bring 'em! Vendors will be taking the outdated Bucks on this last Market day!

Ok one more thing, we'll also be passing out official invitations to our End of the Winter Market Season Gathering! More info on this to come, but you can find out first at the Market this weekend!

I loved seeing the ice covered tree twigs (tree-cicles!) glisten in the street lights! In true southern Illinois fashion, I'm sure it will all be gone by the end of today...

This Saturday's Market is packed with education, community and fresh food! We are excited to be a part of the 11 Days for Food Justice event calendar! Check out all of the events covering an array of Food Justice issues for the next 11 days by going to the Non-Violent Carbondale 11 Days website or by visiting their facebook page.
Tomorrow at 9:30a.m. join Mike Hatfield from Flyway Family Farm for a demo all about mushrooms! He'll bring the growing logs and show you what a "real" mushroom looks like (hint: the beautiful oyster mushroom you buy at market are only the flowers of the plant!)

Then, tomorrow at 10:30a.m. join Chris and Lili from the Juicing Bar as they talk about the delicious benefits of juicing! Discuss new juicing recipes for everyone, from the person who just loves fresh juice, to those wanting to use juicing to enhance every aspect of heath!
Here is the press release for the rest of the 11days events throughout Carbondale!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nonviolent Carbondale to Hold 11 Days for Food Justice Events in Carbondale

CARBONDALE – Nonviolent Carbondale, a coalition of citizens and
organizations, has planned another 11 Days event. From February 21st
through March 3rd, the 11 Days for Food Justice will include over 30
events, happening throughout the city. Sponsored by various community
organizations, there will be a variety of speakers, movies, workshops,
and discussions.

Information about the 11 Days for Food Justice, including a full list
of events, can be found on the website
http://www.nonviolentcarbondale.org/.

Jessica Bradshaw, Chair of the Carbondale Human Relations Commission,
says, “The idea came from the University. This year, most of SIU’s
incoming freshmen read selections from a book called Reclaiming our
Food, by Tanya Denckla Cobb, a primer on food issues.” While the
University emphasizes sustainability and food, Bradshaw says “it is
also important to consider issues of justice when we talk about food.”

Elissa Johnson, co-organizer of the Winter Farmer’s Market and member
of the group organizing 11 Days for Food Justice, says, “Food is not
often considered an issue of social justice, but this connection is
important for the continuation and development of equitable
communities." By definition, Bradshaw says, “food access and justice
affects everyone because everyone eats.”

Nonviolent Carbondale started as a working group of the Carbondale
Human Relations Commission. In the past two years, they have hosted
two other “11 Days” events: the 11 Days for Peace in September 2011
and the 11 Days for Compassion in May 2012.
As the winter wonderland continues we here at the Winter Farmers Market are thinking up ways to help you recycle all of these holiday cards. Not that the thought doesn't count, but really, how many cards can one person keep, and for how long?!

Some cards are just too pretty to go to the recycling bin, and it seems sad to waste the effort of a well designed seasonal card on the bin. Luckily there are multiple organizations, classrooms and individuals who repurpose these cards and use the fronts to make new cards!

Bring your holiday cards to the Winter Farmers Market on January 5th or January 12th and deposit them in the big card box! If you'd like, you can keep the inside/back portion of the card, since this is usually the sentimental part anyway. If you don't feel like messing with that just toss the whole thing in the box and we'll make sure your auntie's special note gets taken off before we send it out. ;-)

Continue to enjoy these snow-filled days while they last!
Happy New Year!
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The phrase “buy local” has been around for
a few years and is becoming popular. One common statement is that a
dollar spent at a locally owned business circulates an average of
seven times and helps the local economy more than one spent online,
out of town, or at a national chain. The Carbondale’s
Winter Farmers Market will test this idea by passing out “Market
Bucks” that will be accepted by all the vendors as the equivalent
of one dollar. Vendors will also give the Bucks as change so that
customers can spend them at another vendor. Each Market Buck will be
marked to indicate that it passed through a vendor's hands and, at
the end of the market day, when the vendors cash in the Bucks, there
will be a record of how many times each Buck circulated in the market
place.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Market Bucks will be sponsored by local
organizations that share the mission of promoting access to healthy
foods. Market Bucks will be valid for one day only, and only at the
market. This week's Market Bucks are sponsored by the Jackson County Health Department.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Twenty different vendors are expected at this
week's market, offering fresh local produce that is difficult to
find in area stores: heirloom tomatoes, honey, and oyster
mushrooms, along with seasonal favorites – hearty greens, root
vegetables, and squashes. Customers can taste-test several
varieties of pecans, sold by Cooley Farm. River-to-River Farm
displays a half dozen different kinds of garlic. People
thinking about Christmas presents will want to check out the jewelry,
artisan soaps, and wood-crafts as well as canned goods provided by
Leepy’s. A full list of the vendors and
