11 Days for Food Justice events at the Market & the list! 2/23/13

Hopefully everyone made it through the icy mix yesterday and was able to enjoy a cozy house and a night in! I loved seeing the ice covered tree twigs (tree-cicles!) glisten in the street lights! In true southern Illinois fashion, I'm sure it will all be gone by the end of today...

This Saturday's Market is packed with education, community and fresh food! We are excited to be a part of the 11 Days for Food Justice event calendar! Check out all of the events covering an array of Food Justice issues for the next 11 days by going to the Non-Violent Carbondale 11 Days website or by visiting their facebook page.

Tomorrow at 9:30a.m. join Mike Hatfield from Flyway Family Farm for a demo all about mushrooms! He'll bring the growing logs and show you what a "real" mushroom looks like (hint: the beautiful oyster mushroom you buy at market are only the flowers of the plant!)

Then, tomorrow at 10:30a.m. join Chris and Lili from the Juicing Bar as they talk about the delicious benefits of juicing! Discuss new juicing recipes for everyone, from the person who just loves fresh juice, to those wanting to use juicing to enhance every aspect of heath!

All Market long, enjoy family activities! WSIU Public Broadcasting will distribute free Sesame Street Food For Thought: Eating Well on a Budget toolkits containing DVDs, a children's story, and recipe cards in English and Spanish. These toolkits are a great way for families to learn about healthy habits while enjoying the popular PBS KIDS characters. WSIU will lead children in playing the Sometimes and Anytime Food game and games based on Fizzy's Lunch Lab.

On top of all of that, you'll also find fresh produce, meat, eggs and other goodies! Here's the updated list for tomorrow, February 23, 2013.

11 Days for Food Justice events!

The following is a press release from Nonviolent Carbondale and the 11 Days for Food Justice events. The Winter Farmers Market is happy to be a part of this great initiative and will be hosting special speakers, demos and events throughout the 11 Days (and before!)

We begin our events with THIS SATURDAY's 4th Annual Seed Swap!
This week we will also host Susan Odum of the University of Illinois Extension. Through interactive display, demos and prizes for participation, Odum will impart the importance of buying local and supporting a local economy!

Here is the press release for the rest of the 11days events throughout Carbondale!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nonviolent Carbondale to Hold 11 Days for Food Justice Events in Carbondale

CARBONDALE – Nonviolent Carbondale, a coalition of citizens and
organizations, has planned another 11 Days event. From February 21st
through March 3rd, the 11 Days for Food Justice will include over 30
events, happening throughout the city. Sponsored by various community
organizations, there will be a variety of speakers, movies, workshops,
and discussions.

Information about the 11 Days for Food Justice, including a full list
of events, can be found on the website
http://www.nonviolentcarbondale.org/.

Jessica Bradshaw, Chair of the Carbondale Human Relations Commission,
says, “The idea came from the University. This year, most of SIU’s
incoming freshmen read selections from a book called Reclaiming our
Food, by Tanya Denckla Cobb, a primer on food issues.” While the
University emphasizes sustainability and food, Bradshaw says “it is
also important to consider issues of justice when we talk about food.”

Elissa Johnson, co-organizer of the Winter Farmer’s Market and member
of the group organizing 11 Days for Food Justice, says,  “Food is not
often considered an issue of social justice, but this connection is
important for the continuation and development of equitable
communities." By definition, Bradshaw says, “food access and justice
affects everyone because everyone eats.”

Nonviolent Carbondale started as a working group of the Carbondale
Human Relations Commission. In the past two years, they have hosted
two other “11 Days” events: the 11 Days for Peace in September 2011
and the 11 Days for Compassion in May 2012.
